Spain recalls Jenni Hermoso after World Cup kiss scandal

1 min read

Jenni Hermoso, the Spanish midfielder, has been included in the national women’s squad for the first time since the unsolicited kiss controversy involving former football federation president Luis Rubiales after the Women’s World Cup final. The scandal led to Rubiales’ resignation and the dismissal of coach Jorge Vilda, who was replaced by Montse Tome. Last month, Tome left Hermoso out of the squad, saying it was to “protect her.” Hermoso criticized the decision. Rubiales is facing a sexual assault complaint regarding the kiss under a recent reform of the Spanish penal code that categorizes nonconsensual kisses as sexual assault.
