Actress Sophie Turner has sued her estranged husband, pop star Joe Jonas, to get him to give her their two daughters’ passports so she can take them to England.
Turner, known for her role as Sansa Stark in “Game of Thrones,” filed her lawsuit in a New York federal court. She invoked the child abduction rules of the Hague Convention, an international agreement aimed at bringing back a child taken from their usual home country.
In the suit, Turner, 27, mentioned that she and Jonas, 34, had originally agreed to raise their daughters in England, her home country. She claimed that the girls, aged 3 and 1, are fully immersed in English life.
Turner said that she and Jonas decided together to move to England in April of this year. In August and September, while Jonas was touring with his band in the U.S., Turner was working on a TV show in England. They had arranged for the children to travel with Jonas and a nanny.
The plan was for Turner to pick up the kids in New York after her filming ended on September 14. However, their marriage took a sudden turn. Jonas filed for divorce in Florida on September 1, which Turner found out about through the media on September 5. They publicly announced their amicable decision to end the marriage on September 6.
Turner claimed that when she met Jonas on September 17 and asked for their daughters’ passports, he refused to hand them over. The girls were born in the U.S. but have both American and British citizenship.
According to the court filing, the girls are currently staying with Turner in a Manhattan hotel. The Jonas Brothers had concerts scheduled in Philadelphia and Baltimore.
In response, Jonas stated that he is seeking shared parenting and is okay with the children being raised in both the U.S. and the UK. He called the use of the term “abduction” misleading and an abuse of the legal system.
The couple met in 2016 and got married in 2019. Joe Jonas is well-known as a member of the pop group the Jonas Brothers since 2005.
