North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin have exchanged letters, affirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. The letters were exchanged on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. This communication follows Kim’s recent visit to Russia, during which he and Putin discussed military cooperation, North Korea’s satellite program, and the situation in Ukraine.

Kim expressed his satisfaction with their discussions during the visit and pledged to elevate their relations to new heights. He also wished Putin success in resisting Western pressure over Ukraine, referring to it as hegemony from imperialist forces. Kim’s message conveyed his hopes for Russia to achieve victory and maintain its sovereignty, dignity, security, and peace while opposing imperialistic policies.

In response, Putin acknowledged the positive developments in their relationship, emphasizing that implementing their agreements would contribute to expanding constructive cooperation, improving the well-being of their peoples, and ensuring security and stability in the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia.

Kim’s visit to Russia has raised concerns in the United States about the potential for a strengthened Moscow-Pyongyang alliance that could enhance Russia’s military presence in Ukraine and provide North Korea with missile technology, which is prohibited under UN resolutions.

The U.S. has accused North Korea of supplying weapons to Russia for its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, including artillery shells, shoulder-fired rockets, and missiles. Both North Korea and Russia have denied engaging in arms transactions but have expressed their intent to deepen defense cooperation.
