2024 Toyota Tacoma X-Runner Concept: The Ultimate Sport Truck
TOYOTA : Toyota showcased a unique concept truck at the 2023 SEMA show in Las Vegas, drawing attention despite being notably street-oriented. This concept vehicle revives the “X-Runner” name from the past and applies it to a 2024 Tacoma sport-truck concept. The Tacoma X-Runner concept comes with several modifications, including a lowered suspension and increased power.
Under the hood, the Tacoma X-Runner concept features a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine, borrowed from the larger Tundra. In this configuration, the engine delivers an impressive 421 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. This power output surpasses the most robust setup of the 2024 Tacoma, which is a 326-hp four-cylinder hybrid. The vehicle also incorporates a solid axle from the Tundra with a 4.30:1 final drive and an electronic locking differential to distribute torque to the rear wheels. The exhaust pipe is now routed just below the rocker panel on the truck’s side.
Beneath the modified bodywork, the Tacoma X-Runner concept utilizes the air suspension from the Tundra, allowing the Tacoma to maintain a lower ride height while still having the capacity to carry a load. The control arms’ length was customized due to the lowered stance of the Tacoma, and Toyota reinforced the frame while widening the track width by approximately three inches. Stiffer springs and 2.5-inch Bilstein shocks at each corner contribute to the truck’s performance. The vehicle rides on a set of Lacks Enterprises 21-inch carbon-fibre wheels with forged aluminium centre’s, fitted with Michelin 285/45R21 Sport Tires.
This concept truck is presented in the same Speedway Blue as the original Tacoma X-Runner that made its debut at the 2004 Chicago Auto Show. While it remains uncertain if this hints at a production version of the truck with a similar performance package, it has certainly generated excitement about the possibility of such a vehicle hitting the streets in the near future.
