President-elect Donald Trump has long hinted at taking legal action against his political opponents, and a recent report by House Republicans has amplified these intentions. As per the Leaders team sources, a report authored by GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk, calls for the FBI to investigate former Representative Liz Cheney for her role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack investigation.

Trump, who has previously suggested Cheney should face jail time, reacted on social media, stating that Cheney “could be in a lot of trouble” based on the findings. This report comes amidst Trump’s continued assertions of systemic bias in the legal system against conservatives.

The report accuses Cheney, a former vice chair of the January 6 Select Committee, of colluding with Cassidy Hutchinson, a key witness whose testimony was instrumental in the committee’s investigation. Loudermilk alleges that Cheney may have violated federal laws and calls for further scrutiny by federal agencies.

In response, Cheney strongly defended her work on the committee, labeling the report as a baseless attack meant to distract from Trump’s role in inciting the Capitol riot. She emphasized the committee’s thorough investigation and denounced the allegations as defamatory and politically motivated.

According to the sources of Leaders team, despite Trump’s rhetoric, the legal pursuit of Cheney remains a contentious issue within the Republican Party. Some GOP lawmakers have expressed concerns about using the justice system for political retaliation. Others, like House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, suggest any investigation would depend on the Justice Department under Trump’s administration.

While Cheney faces mounting political pressure, constitutional protections for legislators’ work may complicate efforts to prosecute her. The Speech or Debate Clause shields members of Congress from legal scrutiny over their legislative activities, providing a significant barrier to such investigations.

As Trump prepares for his presidency, this development signals a broader Republican effort to challenge narratives around the January 6 investigation and reshape the political landscape in alignment with Trump’s vision. However, the pursuit of retribution remains divisive, even within Trump’s own party.
