Coffee enthusiasts and adventurers seeking a rare glimpse into one of the world’s most secretive nations now have a unique destination to explore. According to the reports of Leaders team, Starbucks has opened a café in South Korea’s Aegibong Peace Ecopark, offering patrons the chance to enjoy their favorite brews while gazing across the border into North Korea.
A Café Like No Other
Located about 20 miles from Seoul, this 30-seat Starbucks sits atop an observation tower overlooking the Jo River, near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)—one of the most fortified borders in the world.

On clear days, visitors can spot farms, low-rise buildings, and even people in North Korea’s Kaepung County, using binoculars or zoom lenses for a closer look.
Opened on November 29, the café attracted crowds eager to sip coffee while soaking in the historical significance of the site. Local resident Baek Hea-soon remarked, “I wish I could share this tasty coffee with the people living in North Korea right in front of us.”
For others, like 80-year-old Vietnam War veteran Lim Jong-chul, the café represents a shift in perception. “The concept of security felt rigid and tense, but now, with this café here, it feels more peaceful and reassuring,” he shared.
Blending History, Culture, and Tourism
As per the sources of Leaders team, the ecopark where the café is located was once the site of Hill 154, a battleground during the Korean War (1950-1953). Today, local authorities are leveraging the area’s historical significance to boost tourism, offering an alternative to traditional DMZ tours.
Gimpo Mayor Kim Byung-soo highlighted the café’s role in showcasing the “charm of Korean culture” while providing visitors with a rare perspective on North Korea.
Tensions Amid a Unique Experience
The opening comes at a time of heightened tensions between North and South Korea. Earlier this year, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared an end to reconciliation efforts and issued nuclear threats. Despite the political backdrop, the Starbucks at Aegibong Peace Ecopark offers a peaceful and reflective space, bridging history and hope.
A Glimpse Into the Hermit Kingdom
For those intrigued by the enigmatic North Korea, the café provides a safe and accessible way to observe life in the isolated nation from afar. As North Korea considers reopening limited international tourism after nearly five years of closed borders, this Starbucks stands as a symbolic meeting point of past and present, conflict and culture.
Whether you’re a history buff, a curious traveler, or a coffee lover, this unique café invites you to sip, reflect, and take in a truly one-of-a-kind view.
