As per the latest report from Leaders Asia sources, Riyadh Metro, a landmark urban transit project operated by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), officially began passenger services today, marking a new era of transportation in the Saudi capital.

Following its inauguration by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on November 27, 2024, the metro now provides convenient and efficient travel options on three of its six planned lines.

The operational lines include the Blue Line (Al-Olaya–Al Batha), the Yellow Line (King Khalid International Airport Road), and the Purple Line (Abdulrahman bin Aouf Street–Sheikh Hassan bin Hussain bin Ali Road). The metro is expected to significantly reduce travel times and ease congestion in Riyadh, which is home to over seven million residents.

Future Expansion Plans
The remaining three lines are set to launch in stages, with the Red Line (King Abdullah Road) and Green Line (King Abdulaziz Road) scheduled to open on December 15, 2024. The Orange Line (Madinah Road) will begin operations on January 5, 2025. Additionally, key stations along the Blue Line, including Ministry of Interior, Qasr Al-Hukm, and King Fahd Library, will open before the end of 2024. On the Purple Line, An Naseem Station will also become operational within the same timeframe.

Technology-Driven Convenience
According to the Leaders Asia sources, passengers can plan their journeys and purchase tickets through the user-friendly “darb” mobile app or from ticket vending machines at metro stations. This integration of digital technology aims to provide a seamless and efficient travel experience, a key aspect of the project’s vision.

A Game-Changer for Riyadh
The Riyadh Metro is part of the Kingdom’s broader Vision 2030 initiative, which seeks to modernize infrastructure, diversify the economy, and enhance the quality of life for residents. Once fully operational, the six-line network will span 176 kilometers and feature 85 stations, making it one of the largest metro systems in the world.

In addition to reducing road traffic and pollution, the metro is expected to stimulate economic growth by creating jobs, improving accessibility, and enhancing the city’s global competitiveness. According to Leaders Asia, the project reflects Riyadh’s aspirations to become a sustainable and modern urban hub, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to smart city solutions and environmental stewardship.

With its phased rollout, Riyadh Metro is poised to revolutionize urban mobility, setting a benchmark for future transportation projects in the region and beyond.
