The cruise industry continues to grow, with an estimated 37.1 million passengers expected to take to the seas in 2025, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). However, alongside this expansion, according to the reports of Leaders team, there has been a troubling rise in gastrointestinal outbreaks aboard cruise ships, making 2024 the worst year for such illnesses in over a decade, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Norovirus at Sea

The CDC data reveals that norovirus, a highly contagious virus, was the leading cause of these outbreaks. In December alone, five cruise ships reported cases of norovirus, with hundreds of passengers experiencing symptoms on vessels operated by Cunard Line, Holland America, and Princess Cruises.
As per the sources of Leaders team, Norovirus thrives in confined spaces, such as cruise ships, camps, and hotels, due to its highly infectious nature. Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert, explains that even a few viral particles can trigger an infection, making close-contact environments particularly vulnerable. The virus can persist on surfaces for days, further increasing the risk of transmission.
2024’s Alarming Numbers
The CDC recorded 16 gastrointestinal outbreaks on cruise ships in 2024, the highest number in over a decade, compared to 14 in 2023. While norovirus was the primary culprit, other pathogens like salmonella and E. coli also caused outbreaks on select ships.
Despite these figures, the CDC spokesperson notes it’s too early to determine if this uptick represents a lasting trend, as cruise travel was significantly disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Preventing Illness Onboard
Cruise lines have implemented measures such as quarantine protocols and increased sanitation to curb the spread of illness. Passengers are advised to:
- Report symptoms promptly: Inform medical staff if you feel unwell.
- Practice frequent handwashing: Use soap and water, which are more effective than alcohol-based sanitizers against norovirus.
- Avoid cruising when ill: Rebook your trip if you’re feeling unwell.
What Lies Ahead?
While experts like Dr. Schaffner remain cautious about predicting future trends, maintaining vigilance and following hygiene protocols remain essential for passengers and crew alike.
Cruise travel promises adventure, but staying informed and proactive can help ensure a healthy and enjoyable experience on the open seas.
