Ukrainian forces have reportedly captured an injured North Korean soldier fighting for Russia in the ongoing war, South Korea’s intelligence agency confirmed on Friday. This marks the first North Korean prisoner of war since December, when Pyongyang began deploying troops to assist Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The confirmation follows the circulation of a photo on Telegram that purportedly shows the wounded soldier.
North Korea’s Role in Russia’s War
According to Ukrainian and South Korean officials, over 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to aid Russia. Neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has confirmed these allegations.
“This is the first of what may be a series of captures and casualties,” Yang Uk, a research fellow at the Asian Institute for Policy Studies, told the BBC. He suggested that capturing North Korean soldiers could give Ukraine leverage in potential prisoner exchanges with Russia.
