He conveyed this message on the occasion of the inaugural International Day of Police Cooperation, established by the UN General Assembly during its 77th session.

The UN chief highlighted, “Women’s involvement enhances access to justice for everyone, particularly victims of gender-based violence, who are more inclined to seek assistance from female officers.”

Women in law enforcement fulfill essential roles spanning crime prevention, criminal investigations, safeguarding human rights, and ensuring safety and security.

A police force that mirrors the diversity of its community enhances trust, confidence, and safety, ultimately leading to improved service delivery.

Mr. Guterres stressed, “Police should represent the varied societies they serve. The United Nations actively supports Member States in ensuring gender parity at all levels, including leadership, within the police force.”

Promoting gender equality within law enforcement necessitates addressing the barriers that hinder women officers from achieving full and meaningful participation.

He concluded, “Let’s work together to encourage cooperation, advance gender equality, and create a safer future for all.”

On the occasion of the inaugural International Day, and recognizing the pivotal role of women in policing, the UN calls upon societies worldwide to embrace police reforms, enabling women to build meaningful careers while serving their communities under the umbrella of justice.
