Elon Musk has publicly called for Nigel Farage to step down as leader of Reform UK, igniting a political storm weeks after reports of Musk’s potential donation to the party. According to the sources of Leaders team, the rift appears tied to Musk’s vocal support for far-right activist Tommy Robinson, a position Farage refuses to endorse.
In a post on X, Musk stated that Farage “doesn’t have what it takes” to lead Reform UK but gave no further explanation. Farage responded, saying, “Elon is a remarkable individual, but on this, I am afraid I disagree. My view remains that Tommy Robinson is not right for Reform, and I never sell out my principles.” Minutes later, Musk posted, “Free Tommy Robinson now.”
As per the reports of the Leaders team, the clash comes just hours after Farage called Musk a “hero” during an interview, emphasizing that Musk’s support makes Reform UK “look cool” but adding, “This doesn’t mean I agree with every single statement he makes.”
Since meeting Farage in December, Musk has been increasingly vocal about UK politics. Recently, he amplified calls for a national inquiry into grooming gangs, criticizing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his handling of such cases during his tenure as director of public prosecutions.
Speculation around Musk’s financial support for Reform UK remains uncertain. While Farage and Musk reportedly discussed a $100 million (£80.5 million) donation, Farage dismissed the figure as “for the birds.” As a U.S. citizen, Musk cannot personally donate to UK political parties but could do so through the British arm of his company.
The public clash between Musk and Farage leaves questions about Reform UK’s leadership and the future of their alliance.
