Early Life and Education

Abeer’s passion for heritage emerged early in life, leading her to pursue a degree in Computer and Information Sciences. Her education at King Saud University and further executive programs at Harvard Business School equipped her with the tools to lead large-scale transformations.

Career Journey Across Sectors

Abeer gained valuable experience across public and private sectors:

  • Hewlett-Packard (HP): Business Support Analyst, SADAD Project (2007–2008)
  • SAB: Productivity Management Manager (2010–2013)
  • PwC: Assistant Manager, Government Strategy (2013–2017)
  • General Entertainment Authority: Head of Vision Realization Office (2017)

These roles strengthened her foundation in delivering national-level transformation projects.

Founding Member of RCU

In 2017, Abeer became a founding executive at RCU, overseeing strategic planning and partnerships. She led the “Journey Through Time Masterplan”, aiming to attract 2 million visitors annually by 2035 while conserving AlUla’s natural and cultural heritage.

Global Partnerships for Sustainable Development

Under her leadership, RCU established collaborations with UNESCO, IUCN, Panthera, World Bank, and SUEZ, emphasizing sustainable development, conservation, and eco-tourism. Initiatives like the Hammayah Program empower locals to become stewards of AlUla’s future.

Cultural Innovation: Winter at Tantora & Maraya

Abeer introduced Winter at Tantora, a global cultural festival featuring music, art, and heritage, earning two Guinness World Records—including for Maraya, the world’s largest mirrored building. It symbolizes harmony between modern architecture and historic landscapes.

Environmental Commitment: Nature and Design

  • Sharaan Nature Reserve protects biodiversity while supporting eco-tourism.
  • Sharaan Resort, designed by Jean Nouvel, is built into sandstone cliffs—merging architecture with nature.
  • Wadi AlFann envisions massive art installations in the desert, blending creativity with environmental values.

Empowering Future Generations

Abeer launched the AlUla Scholarship Program, enabling Saudi youth to study globally in fields like tourism, archaeology, hospitality, and agriculture. These graduates will become future custodians of AlUla’s legacy.

Sustainable Infrastructure: Catenary-Free Tramway

In collaboration with Alstom, Abeer led the catenary-free tramway project, offering sustainable transit across AlUla’s heritage sites. This innovative infrastructure respects the environment while enhancing visitor access.

Championing Women in Leadership

As a leading woman executive in Saudi Arabia, Abeer is a role model. Her success represents progress under Vision 2030, encouraging gender inclusion and inspiring young women to lead in sectors like tourism, heritage, and government.

Abeer Al-Akel is not just managing a project—she’s building a legacy.
