The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has emerged as one of the top 10 countries globally when it comes to coffee consumption. This significant coffee culture has spurred the government to take various initiatives and programs to foster coffee cultivation within the country.

Currently, the Kingdom produces over 400,000 Arabica coffee trees, yielding more than 800 tons annually. These coffee crops are primarily grown in the regions of Jazan, Aseer, and Al-Baha. As part of a sector development plan, the aim is to plant 1.2 million coffee trees by the year 2026.

On the occasion of International Coffee Day, celebrated annually on October 1st, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture highlighted the presence of more than 2,535 coffee farms in the Southern Region of the Kingdom. This includes over 500 model coffee farms. The ministry reiterated its commitment to increasing coffee production, recognizing its potential as a high-value crop.

The ministry’s vision involves transforming 15 provinces in the southwestern part of the Kingdom into significant sources of Saudi Arabian coffee, with a particular focus on Arabica coffee known for its exceptional quality. This endeavor aims to boost coffee production in support of the national economy, aligning with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

To achieve these goals, the ministry has launched several initiatives and programs to develop coffee cultivation. It has received support from the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program (REF) to enhance the production, manufacturing, and marketing of Arabica coffee. Additionally, an investment agreement has been signed for the establishment of the Kingdom’s first coffee city.

Recognizing the cultural significance of coffee, the Kingdom successfully had it included on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. This accomplishment, coupled with the leadership’s support, has led to the use of the term “Saudi Coffee” to replace “Arabic Coffee.” In 2022, the Year of Saudi Coffee was celebrated.

Furthermore, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) has been directed to launch the Saudi Coffee Company, emphasizing the special importance of this sector among Saudis and the Kingdom’s guests. This concerted effort showcases Saudi Arabia’s commitment to promoting and expanding its thriving coffee culture.
